Organizational Summary:

It’s an exciting time to join the Cincinnati Animal CARE team! Cincinnati Animal CARE runs Hamilton County’s animal services and Dog Warden operations. CAC is a national leader in progressive lifesaving and animal welfare. 

Job Summary:

The Foster Manager will oversee and implement contemporary, best practice foster programming that works in cooperation and alignment with overall shelter goals. The foster program must respond to the real time needs of the shelter as they change, including day-to-day management of on-site populations. This person will demonstrate a sense of urgency and be responsible for the health and wellbeing of the animals in foster, as well as, ensuring a great and safe experience for the foster families who open their doors. The Foster Manager will oversee a small team of staff and volunteers who will develop and grow programming around day trips, short-term fostering, long-term fostering and fostering for our community support program such as temporary housing for reasons like domestic violence, cruelty cases, and homelessness.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strategic long-term, forward-thinking vision for the foster program that aligns with CAC’s mission and considers Cincinnati’s projected growth and community needs, as well as, potential changes in animal welfare 
  • Empower direct reports to execute programming that supports the direction of the department 
  • Establish and build relationships with our foster families
  • Prioritize the safety of our foster families and initiate regular review of protocol and identify opportunities for improved training and education
  • Work collaboratively with other department managers to ensure strategic, efficient overall shelter operations that save the most lives
  • Identify gaps in lifesaving and focus resources toward the development of programming to solve for those gaps
  • Identify program roadblocks and pitch comprehensive, data-based solutions to the Director of Lifesaving, including staffing additions and marketing and program expansion
  • Assess operational effectiveness of foster programming and protocol
  • Create and implement accountability measures and performance metrics for department success and growth
  • Build systems and protocols to ensure foster program sustainability
  • Work with the Community Engagement Manager to develop a clear Foster program culture and identity that positively engages the community
  • Manage, inspire and motivate a team of staff and volunteers
  • Establish and maintain a budget for the foster program

Program Responsibilities:

  • Work with Cat and Dog leadership to manage shelter population by identifying animals most in need of foster
  • Provide training and education for fosters to have a positive and safe experience
  • Engage our community beyond our current foster base to attract new, diverse fosters, particularly in the areas of behavior and medical specialities
  • Provide excellent customer service to pet parents and potential fosters
  • Match foster families with appropriate foster animals based on their skills and situation
  • Write creative foster pleas as needed, sometimes daily
  • Establish levels and specialties of fostering based on experience and comfort-levels 
  • Provide ongoing assistance, coaching, and moral support to foster families
  • Establish a group of reliable Foster Coaches who can be the front line and help respond to the needs of our hundreds of fosters
  • Respond to emails and phone calls from pet and foster parents within a timely manner on assigned workdays and schedule
  • Respond professionally and compassionately to any foster family concerns in a timely manner
  • Schedule vaccines and medication pickup as needed with foster families
  • Maintain and track supplies for foster program
  • Maintain records for foster animals and foster families
  • Prepare handouts and other materials
  • Onboard new foster families
  • Oversee pick up and return of foster animals
  • Collect, clean and prepare foster supplies
  • Manage the Foster Facebook Page
  • Maintain a schedule for the on-call phone

Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of management experience in an animal shelter
  • At least 1 year of foster program experience directly or indirectly
  • Comfortable handling all sizes, breeds and species of animals
  • Ability to understand and adhere to policies and procedures
  • Possess strong and empathetic communication skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues
  • Ability to work under general supervision
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to restrain animals
  • Ability to exercise judgment, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Strong data entry skills 
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift at least 30lbs

Physical Demands: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

Work Environment: 

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Exposure to unvetted animals is frequent; basic knowledge of animal behavior and common sense is needed.

Pay Range: $45-50,000/year
