Cincinnati Animal CARE Calls on Community to Help “Clear the Kennels” During Weekend Adoption Event

Special adoption pricing aims to create space as shelter experiences high population levels

CINCINNATI, OH, Wednesday, April 8th— Cincinnati Animal CARE, the Hamilton County animal shelter and the only stray, open-intake shelter, is inviting the community to step up and help “Clear the Kennels” during a special adoption event taking place Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12, following a recent increase in large-scale intakes that has brought the shelter’s population to a high level.

As Hamilton County’s only stray, open-intake shelter, Cincinnati Animal CARE cannot turn stray animals away, nor can it turn away cases involving suspected neglect or abuse. When population levels rise, it places added strain on space, staffing, and resources, making timely adoptions and foster placements critical to maintaining lifesaving operations. Currently, the shelter has six open kennels at the Colerain location and just 15 open kennels at the Dane location.

“We are still here for every animal who needs us, that will never change,” said Carolyn Evans, Executive Director of Cincinnati Animal CARE. “But when our population gets this high, it stretches our resources and limits how quickly we can move animals through the system. This is where our community plays a vital role.”

ADOPTION SPECIAL – THIS WEEKEND ONLY (APRIL 10–12):

  • $10 adoptions for all adult animals (6 months and older)
  • Kittens: $60 or two for $60 (BOGO)
  • Puppies: $200
  • Hamilton County dog license required: $19.75
  • $5 service fee on all transactions

All adoptions include spay/neuter, vaccinations, and microchipping.

The “Clear the Kennels” event will also include foster-to-adopt opportunities for those not ready to make a decision immediately, (exclusions apply), and dogs in foster care, giving community members flexible ways to help create space while ensuring the right fit for their home.

Over the past month, Cincinnati Animal CARE has seen an increase in animals entering the shelter, from strays to owner surrenders and urgent cases. While the organization continues to operate at a high lifesaving level, sustained population pressure can impact length of stay and overall animal well-being.

“We have so many wonderful animals ready for homes right now,” said Lisa Colina, Senior Manager of Community Engagement. “Adopting or fostering this weekend doesn’t just help one animal, it allows us to free up a kennel for the next one who comes through our doors.”
