When Pigs Fly, Adoption Fees Do Too, at Cincinnati Animal CARE

Waived fee adoptions offered during Flying Pig Marathon weekend

CINCINNATI, OH, Thursday, April 30 Cincinnati Animal CARE, the Hamilton County animal shelter and the sole provider of animal services for the county, is inviting the community to celebrate one of Cincinnati’s most iconic weekends in a meaningful way. In honor of the Flying Pig Marathon, the shelter will host the “Piggest Adoption Event Ever,” offering waived adoption fees on all adult dogs from Friday, May 1 through Sunday, May 3.

As nearly 50,000 anticipated spectators and runners gather across the city for Flying Pig festivities, Cincinnati Animal CARE will be part of the celebration all weekend long. CAC volunteers will be stationed at the finish line with medals for participants of the Flying Fur, Piggabilities, and the 26th Mile Kids Race. CAC will also have a tented space for visitors to learn more about the shelter and how to get involved, at the Flying Pig Festival on Saturday. And the organization will also be present at the official fluid station during the Flying Fur, cheering on human AND dog participants, while spreading awareness about adoptable dogs in need of homes.

Keeping the festivities and celebration going, area residents are encouraged to visit the shelter and meet their match for their new best friend. As the shelter goes into the warmer months ahead, intake numbers are expected to peak this summer. With hundreds of adoptable dogs available now, the event offers an opportunity to bring home a new companion during one of the city’s most spirited weekends, with waived fee adoptions, and supporting the effort to decrease the shelter population as intake numbers rise.

“This weekend is a critical opportunity for our community to step in and help us create space ahead of what we know will be a very busy summer,” said Mollie Watson, CAC’s Associate Director of Strategic Growth. “When the shelters are full, it stretches our resources to support the next animal who needs us. At the same time, this is one of the most fun weekends in Cincinnati. Being part of the Flying Pig Marathon and celebrating alongside runners, families, and their dogs while helping animals find homes makes this truly special. We have been proud to support the Flying Pig with volunteers for the past four years, and this weekend brings everything together in a really meaningful way.”

Adoption fees for all adult dogs over six months of age will be waived all weekend ($75 value). A $5 service fee applies to all transactions, and a $19.75 dog license is required for Hamilton County residents. The promotion is valid at both Cincinnati Animal CARE locations, satellite events, and dogs in foster care. The shelters are open daily from 1 to 6 p.m. Potential adopters can visit 3949 Colerain Avenue for adoptable dogs and 4210 Dane Avenue for more adoptable dogs and the entire cat progra, though cats are not part of the promotion this weekend. Check CAC’s website for the complete listing on satellite events at area PetSmart locations.

The shelter also offers a foster-to-adopt option, (conditions apply), allowing potential adopters to take a dog home on a 48 hour trial basis before making a final commitment. CAC additionally has nearly 200 dogs in foster homes. For those interested in adopting a dog currently in foster care, potential adopters are encouraged to email [email protected] in advance to coordinate placement during the promotion.

Available animals can be viewed online at Cincinnati Animal CARE’s website, with more information also shared across the organization’s social media platforms.

This weekend, when pigs fly in Cincinnati, adoption fees will too.
