What: Join our Big Dog Foster Campaign by picking up a dog over 44lbs to foster OR foster-to-adopt with WAIVED adoption fees during the month of September! Make a difference in a ‘big dog’s life today by fostering a shelter dog or adopting a new family member. BONUS: Anyone who takes a BIG DOG on a day trip or brings a big dog home to foster gets a coupon for a FREE BIG BOY for you and the pup! We’re offering this all month long, as part of our pup cup partnership with Frisch’s. 🍔
Dogs of every breed, shape, and size come through Cincinnati Animal CARE’s shelter doors every year. And while we almost always have small dogs available, it’s our medium and large-sized pups who benefit the most from foster care! With over 300 dogs currently living at our 2 Northside shelter locations, we need ‘big dog’ fosters and adopters more than ever. If you’ve ever considered fostering or adopting a shelter dog, now is the time!
As of August 31st, 2024, we had:
- 13 small dogs needing foster homes (includes small breed dogs and puppies)
- 301 medium + large dogs needing foster homes (includes 53 dogs up to 44lbs and 248 dogs above 44lbs)
Why foster or foster-to-adopt a big dog?
- Built-in adventure buddy: Fostering a big dog gives you a great companion for outdoor activities like hiking, jogging, or long walks, making everyday outings more fun and engaging.

Fostering is FREE, flexible, and the future of animal sheltering! The best part of the foster program at Cincinnati Animal CARE is how flexible it is! Depending on your availability and lifestyle, our matchmakers will find the right foster animal for your home. Fostering is crucial to Cincinnati Animal CARE’s mission. By turning the community into an extension of the animal shelter, foster homes get pets out of an overcrowded facility and allow us to learn more about their behavior in a home environment. Cincinnati Animal CARE provides foster opportunities for dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, and other small animals – but during our Big Dog Foster Campaign, we’re focused on the pups over 44lbs that need a soft spot to land!
About CAC’s Foster-to-Adopt Program:
During our Big Dog Foster Campaign in September, Foster-to-Adopt fees are waived! If you’ve been thinking about getting your first dog or adding another to your family, our Foster-To-Adopt Program would be perfect for you. Fostering to adopt allows you to ‘trial run’ a dog in your home for up to 2 weeks to make sure it’s a good fit before you finalize adoption. If it doesn’t work out, no worries! Schedule a time to return the dog to the shelter.
