What Is Empty the Shelters?

For the past decade, BISSELL Pet Foundation has helped shelters across the country save hundreds of thousands of homeless pets through their Empty the Shelters program. As the nation’s largest funded adoption event, Empty the Shelters removes barriers to adoption by making adoption affordable for families while also supporting shelters directly.

The program works by reimbursing participating shelters like Cincinnati Animal CARE for every pet adopted during the event. That means adopters receive drastically reduced adoption fees while shelters continue receiving critical financial support needed to care for animals entering their facilities every single day.

This partnership is especially meaningful for us as Hamilton County’s animal shelter.

Why This Event Matters Right Now

Spring and summer are some of the busiest times of year for animal shelters nationwide, and Cincinnati is no exception. As the Hamilton County animal shelter, Cincinnati Animal CARE takes in every stray dog that comes through our doors, in addition to thousands of cats, owner surrenders, injured animals, and pets in need of emergency care.

As temperatures rise, so do shelter intakes. Litters of puppies and kittens begin arriving daily, stray animals become more common, and kennels fill quickly. Every adoption creates space, resources, and time for the next animal in need.

That’s why events like Empty the Shelters are so important.

When you adopt during this event, you are doing far more than simply bringing home a pet. You are actively helping your community shelter respond to increasing animal intake during one of the most challenging seasons of the year.

Empty Shelters = Lives Saved

Every adoption creates a ripple effect.

When one animal leaves the shelter, another animal gets the opportunity to enter safely and receive care. Adoption doesn’t just save the life of the pet going home—it also helps the next homeless animal waiting for help.

That’s why we say:

Adoption saves two lives—the adopted pet and the one who takes their place in the shelter.

This event is truly a win-win-win:

  • Win for adopters who can bring home a loving companion at a reduced cost
  • Win for animals who get the second chance they deserve
  • Win for the shelter and community as we create much-needed space for incoming animals

Why Adopt from Cincinnati Animal CARE?

Every animal adopted from Cincinnati Animal CARE receives comprehensive care before going home. Depending on age and eligibility, pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and receive medical evaluations while in our care.

But beyond the medical care, our staff, volunteers, and foster families work every day to learn about each animal’s personality and needs. We want successful, lasting matches between adopters and pets.

With nearly 350 eligible animals participating in this event, adopters will have the opportunity to meet:

  • Playful puppies-at-heart
  • Calm companion dogs
  • Active adventure buddies
  • Independent cats
  • Snuggly lap cats
  • Senior pets looking for a quiet retirement home
  • Hidden gems who simply need someone to give them a chance

Many incredible pets are overlooked simply because shelters are crowded and animals don’t always show their best selves in a kennel environment. BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters program gives these pets a greater chance to finally be seen.

You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Adopt

One of the biggest misconceptions about adoption is that you need to have the “perfect” home, yard, schedule, or experience level. The reality is that there are all kinds of animals with different personalities and needs.

Some pets are looking for hiking partners. Others just want a cozy couch and someone to love them.

Our team is here to help guide you through the process and help you find an animal that matches your lifestyle. If you’ve been considering adoption, this is the perfect opportunity to meet a variety of animals and learn more about what pet might fit best into your family.
